GET TO KNOW A WEDDING CAKE DESIGNER IN RIVIERA MAYA – PASTELERIA LA MIGAJA
🍰 Tell us a little bit about your story and your company.
My name is Carla, and I’m originally from Mexico City but I have been living in Playa del Carmen for 12 years now. I’m married and I have 3 kids. I opened my bakery -La Migaja- 10 years ago as I always had a dream of owning a bakery; In my mind, it was to be a super cute bakery with cakes, pies, cookies, and bread adorning the shop. However, over time as the business matured and grew, it all changed.
🍰 How did you get into wedding and events industry?
After I opened, I realized that Riviera Maya had become a hot spot for destination weddings for its beautiful beaches. So my idea of a “cute” bakery morphed to a “Love” bakery where we could make beautiful, artistic, and fun wedding cakes. We started to take specialized courses and then began the wedding and event magic at La Migaja.

🍰 What’s your favorite thing about working in the wedding and events industry?
Wedding cakes symbolize happiness, love, and the beginning of a good life for a couple and we love to be a part of it! I also love when clients choose a different and new design because it challenges us to make their dream cake become a reality.
🍰 Where do you look for an inspiration for your cakes?
The easiest way to get ideas is Pinterest, you can be very specific and you will get lots of ideas; from romantic and traditional wedding cakes, to Boho, modern and even black wedding cakes. You can find all sorts of inspiration and ideas!
🍰 What are some of your favorite wedding cakes and desserts trends?
I love the Boho style and greenery, it mixes very well with buttercream and fondant. I also love modern cakes, because you can create different and original designs and shapes as you have no constraints. About desserts trends, we offer sweet tables with a variety of personalized desserts and sweets.
🍰 If you had to pick one cake/frosting combination which one would it be and WHY? And which one would you recommend to future brides and grooms?
My favorite cake is the lemon cake with cream cheese and raspberry filling, it is delicious and people love it. But if you are a chocolate lover, the chocolate cake with coffee cream is the best!
🍰 Do most of your couples come with exactly what they want for their wedding cake or do you often provide ideas to them?
Yes, usually they have a very defined theme or cake in their mind when we meet, but sometimes as we start talking about the wedding, their taste, likes and dislikes, we come up with a new design, a different flavor or presentation that they had not thought about. It’s always great to talk to couples and show them how they can have different details to personalize their cake and not have a copy-paste product. Sometimes brides and grooms don’t realize there are a wide number of designs available; we are living great times for design, you can have a gray, black, yellow, or colorful wedding cake, and it will mix with your style and personality.
🍰 How long does it take to make one wedding cake?
Usually a week but it depends on the design. If your cake has many intricate details or sugar flowers and sugar leaves then we need more time as they are time consuming because they are done by hand.
🍰 As a vendor, what has been your biggest wedding day challenge?
For any baker the biggest challenge is the weather, as the heat and humidity are enemies of cakes. Cakes with intricate designs need to be made with fondant, and cakes with a more simple design can be created with buttercream.
🍰 What piece of advice would you give to future brides and grooms choosing their cake design?
Choose a design that represents you! Colors and design have to artfully mix with the wedding theme. We work with the best fondant quality for this weather.
